I have issues with gluten, but I have gluten free pie crust in the fridge so I'm going to try it out. Thanks so much for this recipe! Glad I found it on Pinterest.
I made these little jammy pies and they are my new most favorite thing!!!! so easy! so delicious! thank you so much for this recipe, and for the term "chief domestic officer". You are awesome!!
I like the pop tarts that are the brown sugar cinnamon ones, not really a fan of ones with jam/jelly in or even the vanilla/chocolate ones, any idea on what you would use for filling on them?
got to say i loved pop tart until i worked in one of the factories that made the fruit for a high end pop tart maker. wouldn't touch them if my life depended on it not the cherry one anyways blueberry and apple are fine. anyways this is wonderful i can use my own stuff and much healthier, well as healthy as poptart can be.....lol thanks so much
Each pie crust will make 3 pop tarts. The link to the homemade pie crust recipe above is for a double crust recipe, which will make 6-8 pop tarts total.
I rolled each pie crust into a rectangle and cut out 6 rectangles. I would guess they were about 4inches by 3inches each. I made my crust homemade. If you use store bought crusts, you might only get two pop tarts out of each crust, depending on whether or not you mush the dough back together after cutting out a couple and roll it back out. Refrigerated pie crust is harder to roll out/work with than homemade, from my experience.
store bought or these "home made" poptarts, either way, when categorized as intelligent food, dead food & dumb food, falls under the last 2 categories, & is not fit for consumption of any intelligent human. I can't say anything about those made with "intelligent design", for they are a breed by themselves,
Anonymous: This recipe is fruity jam baked in pie crust and covered with glaze. If that isn't fit for human consumption, I don't know what is. :)
Sounds like you've found your way onto the wrong blog though. :) My style is much too Paula Deen (love her!) for you. Something like this might be more up your alley. You're welcome. http://vegetarianorganicblog.com/
LOL you go Shannon, your Dumb Dead food is the best dead dumb food I've ever had. @ Anonymous Did you try these? I didn't think so.... And you are so witty LOL
Generally speaking, it's bad form to criticize the Blogger for one's own baking mistakes. Perhaps, Anonymous didn't have as much luck as the rest of us with these delicious Pot Tarts? There are probably more productive places for s/he to spend their time, than calling someone else's hard work, "dumb and dead." Sincerely, "Baking Awesome Pot Tarts in Kirkland."
I just found these on Pinterest. Both my kids love pop tarts and request I buy them for daycare breakfasts. I love the idea of them being somewhat better for them. I was thinking of making a bunch at one time, but was wondering if you knew if these froze well. Taht way I can just pull out what I need each morning. Thanks
Anna, I've not frozen them myself yet (they go super fast around here) but I have had other people tell me they froze them. Bake them first, cool them, then freeze, then pop in the toaster to heat. I doubt they'd be quite as yummy that way, but it wouldn't hurt to try!
Goofygirl: I've had another reader tell me she used apple butter and they turned out really well. I am personally not a fan of store bought apple pie filling, but I am guessing that would work in these. Homemade apple pie filling, in my opinion (without having ever tried it) would probably be a mess, because the apples have so much juice/liquid in them. My suggestion is to try apple butter, store bought pie filling, or some kind of homemade apple jam.
It sounds so good and I love apple pie so much, that I am going to play with that idea and see if I can come up with a way to do apples. If I come up with something good, I will blog it.
these are so so good thanks Shannon this is not a dumb dead food idea either a healthier version of the pop tarts....Anonymous you probably haven't tried them!!!.....my girls love these... thanks once again...P.S. did you notice that she/he was Anonymous they DID NOT want their STUPIDITY to reflect back on them....Kathy F ( didn't know how to make a ID but I did publish my name as you see)
Made these this morning and couldn't figure out how many it made until after I made and read the comments (duh!) For my first time I made 4 of them with store bought crust. My Jam squished out. So now that I know to make only 2 to 3 that makes more sense! LOL. Will definately be trying this and also the Brown sugar recipe you have in the comments since my hubby is a fan of those! I WILL perfect these since I stopped buying boxed pop tarts years ago and my kids loved them. They really like these even though they weren't perfect. First time is trial run :) Thank you for the recipe! :)
I just found this on Pinterest. Great recipe. I can't wait to try this, and I'm so glad I can check out all your 'dead and dumb' recipes. Great blog!!!! ~Summer in Oregon
I wish I knew how to answer that question. Having never worked with gluten free pie crust, I simply do not know. :( My advice is to give it a try! I would remove it from the pan if possible and try to roll it out to work with it. If you can't remove it from the pan, I don't think it would work. Perhaps homemade pie crust made with GF flour? Good luck, and thanks for visiting!
Wow! So many comments. I simply MUST try these. I love pop tarts as a general rule, but really hate the commercial flavors and taste nowadays. This way, I can control what I put inside. Thanks, Shannon! And by the way, you replied very graciously to Anonymous. Very impressive and mature.
OMG Shannon...I saw this recipe on Pinterest and it let me to your blog. I am pregnant right now and everything looks sooo darn good and easy to make! I cannot wait to try this recipe...thanks! Shelly
Regarding the apple pie filling--I use the apple pie filling recipe on pickyourown.org, to can my own pie filling, and it is not overly liquidy--the starch thickens the liquid so it's not runny or juicy. A thickened apple pie filling should work just fine in this recipe, you'd just want to chop up the apples a little finer than for pie use.
I tried to make the s'mores (I'm the anonymous commenter because it wouldn't let me select my profile) pop tarts and the marshmallows disappeared. I made s'mores with crescent rolls today and tried marshmallow fluff and it worked! I'm going to try again with pop tarts. Don't use very much fluff because it gets puffy as it cooks! The crescent s'mores were delicious (fluff and chocolate chips) so I'm sure pop tarts will be too!
I think with the s'mores you could use marshmallow fluff (as stated), nutella, and sprinkle graham cracker crumbs on the icing (maybe add a bit of cinnamon to the icing as well).
I think I'll try to freeze some and try some from fresh and compare. I'll update you so you know Shannon. I'm assuming that you rolled your crust out to 1/4 in thick. Thanks!
Found this recipe on Pinterest and cannot wait to try it! My husband and son LOVE pop tarts but I only buy it on a very rare occasion. I'm so excited to make these as I will know EXACTLY what is going into them! Thanks so much for the recipe!
Regarding the GF version- I have not tried a gluten free version of this, but I have readers who have tried it and had it work. You need GF pie crust though. The link below answers questions regarding where to buy store bough GF pie crust, as well as recipes to make your own. Good luck! Please let me know how it turns out for you. (I have a nephew with celiac as well)
I have been making these for years, jam tarts, I don't put a glaze on them though, you can also take your dough and fill them with jam and bake, also good.
I don't know if this was asked yet, but what is the shelf life on these? Like, can I bake up s bunch and store them in air tight bags? I spend way to much money on store bought pop tarts lol
Shelf life would only be a day or two in an airtight bag after they are baked, but if you freeze them after you bake them, you can pop them into the toaster like any other poptart! Thanks for visiting!
Thanks for posting the recipe, we can't wait to try them. We live overseas for my hubby's job and they are to much $$$ even for a special treat. So now we can have better ones and best yet they are easily dairy and egg free for my son with allergies.
Mmmm dead, dumb food. Bustin out my crisco so I can make some of these for my family. Maybe we'll eat it with butta for some extra dumb! Hehe thanks for sharing, just found your blog and I love it!
Jillian- Thank you and thanks for visiting! Break out that butta! ;)

The nerve of someone coming on here and criticizing your work. I myself choose to eat very healthy 95% of the time but sometimes you need to treat yourself, hence my reading your recipe. Thank you.
These look great. I'm going to make a whole wheat crust and use up a bunch of jam I made last summer. Then I'm going to throw them in the freezer spin can pop them in my daughter's lunch box for a treat. Thanks for the idea!
I'm so glad I decided to read all of the comments. Now, I know they can be frozen. Thank goodness. Tried this recipe for the first time today, and I might have gotten just a tad overzealous and accidentally made 20 (Yes, 20. Yes, I know that's a bit nutty). I used my mom's pie crust recipe, subbing "white whole wheat" flour for half of the all-purpose flour, and filled one half of my tarts with a brown sugar/cinnamon/almond meal filling and the other half with homemade organic raspberry jam. I know they still aren't exactly health food, but they're probably better for us than the store-bought ones :) Besides which, they are yummy and fun to make. Thanks for the recipe!
I was wondering if you would mind if I post about these on my blog and link to the recipe here. I am so tickled with the way they turned out, and I would love to share the recipe.
Sasha- You would want to either eat these immediately or bake them and then freeze them in an airtight container. Then just toast them like you would a regular pop tart! Thanks for visiting.
Samlam- So sorry I missed your comment and didn't reply sooner. You are absolutely welcome to share them on your blog. Thanks so much for the comment and for visiting.
Ok, so I'm a little late to the party, but I just made these for my sixteen year old son . We found the recipe on Pinterest. I can't wait for him to try them. Had some leaky jam, but will definitely be making these again !
I forgot that I wanted to make these! Thanks for reminding me - yours look yummy!
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to try this.

Wow... sounds heavenly. Kids will love it but so will momma.
ReplyDeleteJust tried making these. The dough to jam ratio didn't come out great, but definitely a lot lighter real pop tarts.
ReplyDeleteYou could always add more jam if you like them a little bit jammier! :)
ReplyDeleteI made these little jammy pies and they are my new most favorite thing!!!! so easy! so delicious! thank you so much for this recipe, and for the term "chief domestic officer". You are awesome!!
ReplyDeleteThank you!! I'm so glad you liked them!!
ReplyDeleteThey look so good. I can not wait to make them.

ReplyDeleteI like the pop tarts that are the brown sugar cinnamon ones, not really a fan of ones with jam/jelly in or even the vanilla/chocolate ones, any idea on what you would use for filling on them?

ReplyDeleteJust showed this to several of my coworkers and we all can't wait ti try this recipe.
ReplyDeleteTried these with apple butter in them ~ ~ truly awesome!!!
ReplyDeletegot to say i loved pop tart until i worked in one of the factories that made the fruit for a high end pop tart maker. wouldn't touch them if my life depended on it not the cherry one anyways blueberry and apple are fine. anyways this is wonderful i can use my own stuff and much healthier, well as healthy as poptart can be.....lol thanks so much
ReplyDeleteFor a cinnamon/sugar filling, I would try:
ReplyDelete1 cup brown sugar, packed
3 tablespoons ground cinnamon
1/3 cup butter, softened
Please let me know how the gluten free version comes out!
ReplyDeleteThank you for visiting!
ReplyDeleteApple butter sounds awesome! Thanks for visiting!
ReplyDeleteEwww, thanks for the warning! :) Hope you enjoy the slightly healthier and sounds like definitely less gross homemade version!
